The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is one of the largest, most diverse providers of social services in the UK after the Government. Founded in East London in 1865, they are now working in 115 countries worldwide.

As registered charity they demonstrate their Christian principles through social welfare provision. Worldwide there are over 1.6million members, with programmes including homeless centres, drug rehabilitation centres, schools, hospitals and medical centres, as well as nearly 16,000 church and community centres. The work of The Salvation Army is funded through donations from its members, the general public and, where appropriate, local authority and government grants.

Local Salvation Army church and community centres offer a range of activities and services within their local communities. People can become involved in all sorts of ways, through volunteering with fundraising initiatives, attending church services and helping with local activities.
The Salvation Army also supports the work of the emergency services by providing refreshments, shelter and counselling at major incidents.

ABF The Soldiers' Charity

We are The Soldiers' Charity. We give lifetime support to serving and retired soldiers and their families. They risk so much for us, but for them, it's just doing their job.In return, we provide financial assistance when they are in real need. That's what we've been here to offer for 68 years. We have seen a 30% rise over the past two years in applications from soldiers who have taken part in previous and current conflicts and we currently raise £7 million a year to meet this need.As a result of Current Operations it is anticipated that the requests for assistance will rise significantly in the coming years. It is the aim of The Soldiers' Charity to increase fundraising to £14 million a year by 2015 to be sure that we can help each and every soldier that needs our help.We depend entirely on your donations and goodwill to do this.

The Gurkha Welfare Trust

In 1969 it was realised that a great many Gurkha soldiers, and their dependents or widows in Nepal faced destitution in old age. Many of these soldiers had served in the Second World War, however they had not served the 15 years needed to qualify for an army pension. Unlike the British 'Tommy' who could rely on the Welfare State in old age, the Nepalese Gurkha had no such safety net.

Recognising our debt of honour to these great men, the Trust was established. It started buying farms and teaching retired soldiers how to work their land to provide enough food to support their families.

In an arrangement that endures to this day, the Trust's administrative costs are largely met by a grant in aid funding from the Ministry of Defence.

Today, The Gurkha Welfare Trust supports Gurkhas through welfare pensions given to those who do not qualify for an army pension. It also provides a first class medical scheme, hardship grants, emergency aid, community projects, and education grants to the dependants of retired Gurkhas.
